Features That Matter: Feature Engineering
A machine-learning model is only as smart as the numbers you feed it. In this lesson you learn how to turn raw, messy data into powerful features — the single skill that separates a mediocre model from a great one.
The big idea
Beginners think the secret to a good model is a fancier algorithm. Experienced practitioners know the truth: most of the winning happens before the model ever runs, in how you prepare the inputs. Those inputs are called features. A feature is just one column of numbers that describes each example.
If your features hide the pattern, no algorithm can find it. If your features reveal the pattern, even a simple model shines. Learning to build better features is called feature engineering, and it is one of the highest-value skills in all of machine learning.
- Explain in plain words what a feature is and why features matter more than the choice of algorithm.
- Create new, smarter features from raw data: dates, addresses, prices, and text.
- Use domain knowledge — what you know about the real world — to invent features a computer never would.
- Do feature selection: remove useless or repeated columns and understand why more features is not always better.
- Describe the curse of dimensionality and the intuition behind PCA dimensionality reduction.
- Add an engineered column in pandas and read
feature_importances_from a model.
