๐ Fish Biology: Life Processes & Adaptations
Fish are among the most diverse and fascinating vertebrates on Earth. Let's explore how they move, eat, breathe, excrete waste, reproduce, behave, and adapt to their environments.
๐ 1. Movement (Locomotion)
Fish have a streamlined (fusiform) body shape that reduces water resistance, allowing them to glide through water efficiently.
Key Mechanism: Fish swim primarily through undulating movements โ the sequential contraction of segmental muscle blocks called myotomes (or myomeres). Muscles on one side of the body contract while those on the opposite side relax, bending the body from side to side and generating forward thrust.
The Role of Fins
| Fin | Location | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Caudal (Tail) Fin | Posterior end | Provides main thrust for forward propulsion |
| Pectoral Fins | Sides (behind gills) | Steering, braking, and lifting |
| Pelvic Fins | Ventral (belly) side | Stabilization and steering |
| Dorsal Fin | Top (back) | Prevents rolling (lateral stability) |
| Anal Fin | Bottom (near tail) | Prevents rolling (additional stability) |
๐ Swim Bladder: This gas-filled organ allows bony fish to control their buoyancy โ they can hover at any depth without constantly swimming. By adjusting the gas volume inside, fish rise or sink effortlessly.
