๐ Navigation & Migration in Animals
How animals find their way across the entire planet
What Is Animal Navigation?
Animal navigation is the ability of an organism to determine its position and move toward a goal โ whether that goal is a feeding ground, a breeding site, or a natal beach thousands of kilometers away. Migration is the seasonal, large-scale movement of animals between habitats, often spanning continents or even hemispheres.
What makes animal navigation so extraordinary is the toolkit of sensory mechanisms animals use โ often in combination โ to orient and travel across vast distances. These include:
- โ๏ธ Solar compasses โ time-compensated readings of the sun's position
- ๐งฒ Magnetic maps & compasses โ detecting Earth's field intensity and inclination angle
- ๐ Olfactory imprinting โ chemical memory of home waters or landscapes
- โญ Stellar cues โ using stars and even the Milky Way for orientation
- ๐ฌ๏ธ Wind patterns & landmarks โ environmental features for course correction
