Ch18 — Immunology: Gene Expression and Natural Defense Systems

Chapter 18: Immunology

Gene Expression and Natural Defense Systems — How your body recognizes self vs. non-self, builds a three-layered defense, and generates billions of unique antibodies from a limited genome.

18.1

What Are the Major Defense Systems of Animals?

Every defense the body has revolves around a single principle: recognizing self vs. non-self molecules. If a molecule carries the body's own molecular "passport" (MHC proteins), it is left alone. If not, a cascade of destruction is launched. This principle drives everything below.

Core Logic: Pathogens invade → the body must detect them → detection depends on telling "self" apart from "non-self" → two systems evolved to do this: one fast-but-generic (innate), one slow-but-precise (adaptive). They work together as a coordinated system.

The Lymphoid System — Headquarters of Immunity

All blood cells—red and white—originate from pluripotent stem cells in the bone marrow. These cells constantly divide and differentiate. The key lymphoid tissues are: bone marrow (cell production), thymus (T cell maturation), spleen and lymph nodes (filtering and surveillance).
