Chemical Laboratory Equipment and Safety

Chemistry Grade 7 Difficulty 1/5

Beginning of the lesson

Chemical Laboratory Equipment and Safety

Official Grade 7 scope: Introduction, Chapter I — laboratory equipment and safe conduct. The principles apply in school laboratories worldwide.

Big idea

A chemistry laboratory is a place for controlled observation and measurement. Special equipment helps us handle small quantities, measure carefully, heat safely, and collect evidence. Safety is not a separate list to memorize: it is a way of thinking before, during, and after every action. A safe chemist asks what could cause harm, how exposure could occur, and which control lowers the risk.

Supervision rule: Every school investigation described here is performed only with a trained teacher or laboratory supervisor, approved materials, and local school procedures. Never copy a laboratory procedure at home.

Learning goals

  • identify common laboratory equipment by function
  • distinguish a hazard from a risk and select controls
  • choose basic personal protective equipment and safe conduct
  • measure liquid volume and sample mass correctly
  • follow safe rules for heating, odors, spills, broken glass, and waste
  • explain why immediate incident reporting is part of good science
