Redox Reactions and Electron Balance

Chemistry Grade 9 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Electron transfer between particles and a balanced equality of electrons lost and gained
Oxidation and reduction occur together: total electron loss equals total electron gain.

Electron transfer in chemical reactions

An oxidation–reduction (redox) reaction is a reaction in which oxidation states change because electrons are transferred between particles. Oxidation is loss of electrons and an increase in oxidation state. Reduction is gain of electrons and a decrease in oxidation state. These processes always occur together because electrons lost by one particle must be gained by another.
