Integers: The Sign Is Also an Agreement

A thermometer reads minus twelve; a ledger shows a debt. Machines handle negative numbers all day. But look back at the memory assumption with fresh suspicion: a cell holds a number — a count, zero or more. There is no compartment for a minus sign. Where, then, do negative numbers live? By now you can guess the shape of the answer — and the pleasure of this lesson is watching the guess become machinery.

Learning goals: derive that the sign must be an agreement, not a stored mark; explain the half-and-half construction; and read one cell two ways — as a large positive or a small negative number — with both readers right.

The derivation, in three steps

Step 1. A cell holds one number and nothing else — no annotations (the memory assumption, veteran of many lessons). A minus sign stored IN the cell would be an annotation. Therefore no cell contains a sign.

Step 2. Yet negative numbers demonstrably work. By the central lesson of tier 1, whatever meaning a cell's number carries beyond itself lives in the reading agreement. Conclusion, forced: negativity is a reading. The sign is part of the agreement, not part of the cell.
