A File Carries Its Own Agreement

This lesson assembles the whole tier into the one object you touch every day. Documents, photos, songs, programs — everything on every disk is a file, and after seven lessons you can define it without being told: there is only one thing it could possibly be. The pleasure here is recognition — every mechanism was built in earlier lessons; today they click together.

Learning goals: define a file from first principles; settle the extension-versus-header question for life; read "file type" as the name of a reading stack; and apply the recovery asymmetry — what a damaged beginning does and does not destroy.

What a file must be

Derive it. Everything in the machine is numbers in cells (tier 1, no exceptions). A document must survive power-off, so it lives on the disk (the ladder). It must be findable and bounded — a beginning and an end. And it must be readable later, by other programs, on other machines — so it must carry its own reading agreement, and tier 1 built exactly one mechanism for that: the instruction at the start.

A file is a bounded row of numbers that carries its own reading agreement: at its start, at known positions, a header declares what the file is and how to read the rest. Nothing else is available to be; nothing else is needed.

Open any real file "raw" and the theory greets you: the first cells of a PNG image, a PDF document, an archive hold each format's signature numbers — the header announcing itself — and every program that opens files begins by reading exactly those cells. The two-step reading of tier 1 was not a toy; it is the daily bread of every machine on Earth.
