Speed: Uniform and Non-Uniform Motion; Graphs

Physics Grade 7 Difficulty 1/5

Beginning of the lesson

Two motion tracks compare equal cart spacing at uniform speed with increasing spacing during accelerated motion, alongside simple graphs.
Equal distances in equal times indicate uniform speed; changing spacing reveals non-uniform motion.

Speed: Uniform and Non-Uniform Motion

How fast is it moving — and how do we draw that as a picture?

Big Idea: Speed tells you how much distance a body covers in each unit of time. When the speed never changes, the motion is uniform. When the speed keeps changing, the motion is non-uniform, and we describe the whole trip with an average speed. A graph lets us see all of this at a glance.
By the end you will be able to:
  • write and use the speed formula v = s / t,
  • work in the SI unit m/s and convert to and from km/h,
  • tell uniform motion from non-uniform motion,
  • find the average speed of a whole journey,
  • read and sketch distance-time and speed-time graphs.
