What Is Generative AI?
Some machines recognize the world. A newer kind of machine creates it — writing essays, painting pictures, composing songs, and coding software from a few words of instruction. This lesson explains exactly what that means, how it works in plain language, and why the world changed after 2022.
The big idea in one sentence
Generative AI is software that produces brand-new content — text, images, audio, video, or code — by learning the patterns inside huge amounts of examples and then combining those patterns in fresh ways. It does not look up a finished answer in a stored library and hand it back. It builds the answer, piece by piece, the way a musician who has heard thousands of songs can improvise a new melody that no one has ever heard before.
- Explain the difference between discriminative AI (recognizes and sorts things) and generative AI (creates new things), and give clear examples of each.
- Describe what “generating” actually means — and why it is not copy-pasting from a database.
- Name the five main modalities of generative AI (text, images, audio, video, code) and a real product for each.
- Tell the short history: from GANs to diffusion to transformer-based large language models, and why the field exploded after 2022.
- List honest real-world uses for study, work, and creativity — and preview the real limits and debates.
