Advanced Prompting Techniques
A prompt is the message you send to a large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. A basic prompt just asks a question. An advanced prompt is engineered — it is shaped on purpose so the model gives you a better, more reliable, more useful answer. In this lesson you will learn the small set of professional techniques that separate people who "chat with AI" from people who get real work done with AI.
An LLM does not "understand" you the way a friend does. It predicts the most likely continuation of the text you give it, based on patterns it learned from enormous amounts of writing. This means the quality of what comes out depends heavily on the quality of what you put in. The model is not lazy or stubborn — it is simply matching patterns. If your prompt is vague, the pattern it matches is vague. If your prompt is clear, well-structured, and shows exactly what "good" looks like, the model has a much easier job and gives you a far better result.
Advanced prompting is therefore not magic words. It is a handful of reusable habits that steer the model: giving it examples, asking it to think step by step, giving it a role, demanding a specific output format, breaking big jobs into small steps, saving your best prompts as templates, and refining the answer over several turns. Master these seven habits and you can push an ordinary chatbot far beyond what most people ever get out of it.
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
- Use few-shot prompting — show the model 2–3 examples of the exact output you want, and explain why this works.
- Trigger chain-of-thought reasoning so the model works through math and logic step by step instead of guessing.
