Structure of the Eukaryotic Cell
Learning Objectives: Understand the structure and function of eukaryotic cell components including the cell membrane, cytoplasm, organelles, nucleus, and chromosomes.
What is a Eukaryotic Cell?
Eukaryotic cells are complex cells that contain a true nucleus enclosed within a membrane, along with various membrane-bound organelles. The term "eukaryotic" comes from Greek words meaning "true kernel" (referring to the nucleus).
Key Characteristics of Eukaryotic Cells:
- Membrane-bound nucleus containing genetic material (DNA)
- Membrane-bound organelles with specialized functions
- Found in animals, plants, fungi, and protists
- Typically 10-100 μm in diameter (larger than prokaryotic cells)
- Linear chromosomes organized with histone proteins
