What Is a Program?

A friendly look at ordered lists of instructions

Big Idea: A program is an ordered list of instructions that tells someone (or a computer) exactly what to do, one step at a time, in the right order.
By the end you will be able to:
  • say what a program is in simple words,
  • find programs in everyday life, like a recipe or a morning routine,
  • explain why the order of the steps matters.

1. A program is a list of steps

A program is a list of instructions written in a special order. Each instruction is one small step. When you follow the steps in order, from the first to the last, you finish a job.

Think about making toast: "1. Take a slice of bread. 2. Put it in the toaster. 3. Push the lever down. 4. Wait until it pops up." That little list is a program! You do not do everything at once — you do one step, then the next, then the next.

2. Programs are everywhere

Once you know what a program is, you start to see them all around you. Any time you follow steps in order to get something done, that is a program!

Everyday thingWhy it is a program
