Photosynthesis

Biology Grade 6 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

🌿 Why Are Leaves Green?

Have you ever wondered why almost every leaf you see is green — not blue, not red, not purple? The answer hides inside one of the most important chemical reactions on Earth: Photosynthesis.

🌞 Section 1: What Is Photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar (glucose). The word itself comes from Greek: photo = light, synthesis = putting together. So photosynthesis literally means "putting together with light."

🌍 Why Does It Matter?

Most life on Earth depends on photosynthesis. Plants, algae, and some bacteria (phototrophic ones) capture energy from sunlight to produce oxygen and chemical energy stored in glucose. Without photosynthesis, there would be almost no food or oxygen on our planet!

⚗️ Section 2: The Recipe — Inputs & Outputs

Think of photosynthesis like a recipe. You need ingredients (what the plant takes in) and you get a finished product (what the plant creates):

📝 The Photosynthesis Equation (in words)

carbon dioxide + water + light energy → sugar (glucose) + oxygen

💡 Notice: The plant takes simple substances from its environment (carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil), adds the energy of sunlight, and transforms them into entirely new substances — sugar and oxygen. That's the magic of photosynthesis!
