Plant Conservation

Grade 6 Biology — Botany

🌍 Why Are Plants So Important?

Plants are the foundation of life on Earth. Without them, there would be no oxygen to breathe, no food to eat, and no habitats for animals. Plants are called primary producers because they are the first link in nearly every food chain — they convert sunlight into energy that all other living things depend on.

☀️ Photosynthesis — The Engine of Life

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use sunlight, water (H₂O), and carbon dioxide (CO₂) to produce glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) — a sugar used as food — and release oxygen (O₂) as a by-product.

The Photosynthesis Equation

$$6CO_2 + 6H_2O + \text{light energy} \rightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2$$

Six molecules of carbon dioxide + six molecules of water + light → one molecule of glucose + six molecules of oxygen

How Photosynthesis Works Inside a Leaf

🧪 What Goes IN?
  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂) — absorbed from the air through tiny pores called stomata
  • Water (H₂O) — absorbed from the soil through the roots
  • Sunlight — captured by the green pigment chlorophyll in chloroplasts
🌬️ What Comes OUT?
  • Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) — used by the plant for energy and growth
  • Oxygen (O₂) — released into the atmosphere for animals (and us!) to breathe
