From small molecules to macromolecules
A polymer is a substance whose molecules contain very many atoms joined in long chains or networks. The small starting molecule is a monomer. The shortest structural pattern that repeats along a polymer chain is the repeat unit. In formulas, the repeat unit is placed in brackets and the symbol n shows that it occurs many times. The value of n is the degree of polymerisation; a sample normally contains chains with different values of n.
