The Newton–Leibniz Formula

Mathematics Grade 11 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

The Newton–Leibniz Formula

The Fundamental Bridge Between Differentiation and Integration

🎯 The Big Idea

The Newton–Leibniz Formula (also called the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus) is one of the most important results in all of mathematics. It reveals a profound connection: differentiation and integration are inverse operations. This single formula allows us to evaluate definite integrals without computing limits of Riemann sums!

📐 Historical Context

Independently discovered by Sir Isaac Newton (England, ~1666) and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (Germany, ~1675), this formula unified two seemingly unrelated problems:

The Tangent Problem

Finding the slope of a curve at a point → Differentiation

$f(x) \rightarrow f'(x)$

The Area Problem

Finding the area under a curve → Integration

$f(x) \rightarrow \int_a^b f(x)\,dx$
