Simplifying square roots (SAT)

Beginning of the lesson

🔑 Key Concept: The Product Rule for Radicals

The fundamental rule for simplifying square roots is:

√(a × b) = √a × √b

This means we can break apart a square root into the product of two square roots, which allows us to extract perfect squares.

Perfect Squares to Memorize:
1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144...
📋 Step-by-Step Process
  1. Find the largest perfect square factor of the number under the radical
  2. Rewrite the radicand as a product of the perfect square and another factor
  3. Apply the product rule to separate the radicals
  4. Simplify the perfect square root
  5. Write the final answer with the integer outside the radical
