Biology Grade 8 Difficulty 3/5

Beginning of the lesson

Nutrition & Digestion

How your body breaks down food into fuel — the chemistry, the biology, and the math behind every meal.

What Is Nutrition?

Nutrition is the process of taking in food and using it for growth, metabolism, and repair. Every cell in your body depends on the nutrients you eat to carry out its functions.

There are six categories of nutrients:

Carbs
Proteins
Fats
Vitamins
Minerals
Water
Macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) are needed in large quantities — they supply 100% of the energy in your diet and about 90% of its dry weight.
Micronutrients (vitamins & minerals) are needed in much smaller amounts but are equally vital.
