Human Tissues

The 4 Types: Structure, Functions & Examples

What Is a Tissue?

A tissue is a group of similar cells, in close proximity, organized to perform one or more specific functions. The study of tissues is called histology.

Just as bricks come together to form a wall, cells come together to form tissues. And just as different walls, floors, and roofs combine to make a building, different tissues combine to form organs.

Key Fact: There are exactly four basic tissue types in the human body, defined by their morphology (shape) and function: Epithelial Muscle Connective Nervous
