Human Reproduction and Development
Understanding how human life begins, develops, and the biological systems that make it possible.
What is the Reproductive System?
The reproductive system is the human organ system responsible for the production and fertilization of gametes (sperm or eggs) and, in females, the carrying of a fetus. Both male and female reproductive systems have organs called gonads that produce gametes and sex hormones.
♂ Male Reproductive System
The primary function of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm cells (spermatozoa). Key structures include:
| Organ | Function |
|---|---|
| Testes (gonads) | Produce sperm and the hormone testosterone. Contained within the scrotum. Filled with hundreds of tightly coiled seminiferous tubules where sperm are made. |
| Scrotum | External pouch that holds the testes at a temperature slightly below body temperature — essential for sperm production. |
| Epididymis | Coiled tube where sperm mature and are stored. |
| Vas Deferens | Tube that transports mature sperm toward the urethra. |
| Seminal Vesicles & Prostate | Glands that produce seminal fluid (semen), which nourishes and protects sperm. |
| Urethra / Penis | Delivers semen outside the body. |
Key Hormone: Testosterone — responsible for sperm production and male secondary sex characteristics (deeper voice, facial hair, muscle growth).
