π Hearing and Balance
How the Ear Converts Sound Waves into Signals & Keeps You Balanced
π Recall from Previous Lesson
In our last lesson on The Sense Organs, we briefly introduced hearing as one of the five major senses. Now we dive deep into the anatomy of the ear, the step-by-step mechanism of hearing, and the remarkable vestibular apparatus that gives us our sense of balance.
1. The Ear β An Overview
The ear is a remarkable sensory organ that performs two critical functions:
π
Hearing
Converting sound waves in air into electrical signals that the brain interprets as sound.
βοΈ
Balance (Equilibrium)
Detecting head position and movement so the brain can maintain posture and stability.
The ear is divided into three major regions:
- Outer Ear β collects and funnels sound
- Middle Ear β amplifies sound vibrations
- Inner Ear β converts vibrations to nerve signals & detects balance
