Conic sections and Their Applications

Conic sections are the curves formed when a plane intersects a double-napped cone. These curves—circles, ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas—have fascinated mathematicians for over 2,000 years and have numerous applications in science, engineering, and everyday life.

What Are Conic Sections?

Conic sections are formed by the intersection of a plane with a double-napped cone. Depending on the angle and position of the intersecting plane relative to the cone, four distinct curves can be formed:

  • Circle: When the plane is perpendicular to the axis of the cone
  • Ellipse: When the plane intersects one nappe at an angle to the axis
  • Parabola: When the plane is parallel to a generator line of the cone
  • Hyperbola: When the plane intersects both nappes of the cone
