Symmetric Expressions in Terms of Roots

🔑 Big Idea

When we have a quadratic equation $ax^2 + bx + c = 0$ with roots $\alpha$ and $\beta$, we can calculate many expressions involving those roots without ever finding the roots themselves! This is one of the most powerful techniques in algebra.

📐 What is a Symmetric Expression?

An expression $f(\alpha, \beta)$ is symmetric if swapping $\alpha$ and $\beta$ gives the same expression:

$f(\alpha, \beta) = f(\beta, \alpha)$
ExpressionSwap $\alpha \leftrightarrow \beta$Symmetric?
$\alpha + \beta$$\beta + \alpha$ ✓ Same!YES ✅
$\alpha \cdot \beta$$\beta \cdot \alpha$ ✓ Same!YES ✅
$\alpha^2 + \beta^2$$\beta^2 + \alpha^2$ ✓ Same!YES ✅
$\alpha^2 - \beta^2$$\beta^2 - \alpha^2$ ✗ Opposite!NO ❌
$\alpha^3 + \beta^3$$\beta^3 + \alpha^3$ ✓ Same!YES ✅
$\frac{1}{\alpha} + \frac{1}{\beta}$$\frac{1}{\beta} + \frac{1}{\alpha}$ ✓ Same!YES ✅
