Area of a Rectangle — Grade 8
Big Idea: The area of a rectangle measures the amount of two-dimensional space enclosed within its boundaries. It is one of the most fundamental concepts in geometry and serves as the building block for finding areas of triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and even circles.
Formal Definition
A rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles (each measuring $90°$). Opposite sides are equal and parallel.
If a rectangle has length $l$ and width $w$, then its area is:
$$A = l \times w$$
Units: Area is always expressed in square units — e.g., cm², m², in², ft², km².
Why? When you multiply a length (one dimension) by another length, you get a two-dimensional measurement — hence "square" units.
