Mathematics Grade 8 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Estimating Values of Expressions

Big Idea: Estimation is a powerful mathematical skill that allows us to quickly approximate the value of complex expressions without computing exact answers. It helps us check whether our answers are reasonable and strengthens our number sense.

What Does It Mean to Estimate?

When we estimate the value of an expression, we replace complicated numbers with simpler, nearby values that are easier to work with mentally. The goal is to get a value that is close enough to the exact answer to be useful.

Why estimate? Estimation lets you quickly check calculator results, make predictions, and solve real-world problems where exact answers aren't necessary.
