Applications of Vectors in Problem Solving

Big Idea:

Vectors are powerful mathematical tools that combine magnitude (size) and direction. They allow us to solve real-world problems involving forces, motion, navigation, and geometry in elegant ways that ordinary numbers cannot.

📐 What is a Vector?

A vector is a quantity that has both magnitude and direction.

We write a vector as: $\vec{v} = \begin{pmatrix} x \\ y \end{pmatrix}$ or $\vec{v} = x\hat{i} + y\hat{j}$

  • Magnitude: $|\vec{v}| = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2}$
  • Direction: $\theta = \tan^{-1}\left(\frac{y}{x}\right)$

Key Operations:

  • Addition: $\vec{a} + \vec{b} = \begin{pmatrix} a_x + b_x \\ a_y + b_y \end{pmatrix}$
  • Scalar Multiplication: $k\vec{v} = \begin{pmatrix} kx \\ ky \end{pmatrix}$
  • Subtraction: $\vec{a} - \vec{b} = \begin{pmatrix} a_x - b_x \\ a_y - b_y \end{pmatrix}$
🌍 Real-World Applications
  1. Navigation & Displacement: Finding shortest paths, resultant journeys
  2. Forces: Combining multiple forces acting on an object
  3. Velocity: Wind + airplane speed, river current + boat speed
  4. Geometry: Proving properties of shapes, finding midpoints
  5. Game Design: Character movement, collision detection
Key Principle: The resultant vector is the single vector that has the same effect as two or more vectors combined: $\vec{R} = \vec{v_1} + \vec{v_2} + \cdots$
