Logical Connectives: Conjunction, Disjunction & Implication

Big Idea: In mathematics, we often need to combine simple statements into more complex ones. Logical connectives are the tools we use to do this — just like how words such as "and," "or," and "if...then" connect ideas in everyday language.

1. What is a Proposition (Statement)?

Before we dive into connectives, we need to understand propositions. A proposition is a declarative sentence that is either true (T) or false (F), but not both.

✅ Propositions:

  • "5 is a prime number" → True
  • "$3 + 4 = 8$" → False

❌ Not Propositions:

  • "What time is it?" (question)
  • "$x + 2 = 7$" (depends on $x$, it's an open sentence)
