Permutations: The Art of Arranging Things
Big Idea
A permutation is an arrangement of objects in a specific order. When order matters, we use permutations to count the total number of possible arrangements.
🔑 Why Does Order Matter?
Consider a lock combination: 3-7-1 is completely different from 1-3-7, even though they use the same digits.
Compare these two scenarios:
| Order Matters (Permutation) | Choosing a President, VP, and Secretary from a group |
| Order Doesn't Matter (Combination) | Choosing 3 people for a committee |
In this lesson, we focus on situations where order matters.
📐 The Fundamental Counting Principle
Before diving into permutations, recall:
If you have $m$ ways to do one thing and $n$ ways to do another, then there are $m \times n$ ways to do both.
Example: 3 shirts and 4 pants → $3 \times 4 = 12$ outfits
This principle is the foundation of permutations!
