Comparing Numbers

We can compare two numbers.

We use these special signs:

> means "greater than"

< means "less than"

= means "equal to"

On a number line:

  • Numbers to the right are bigger.
  • Numbers to the left are smaller.

5 is to the right of 3.

So 5 is greater than 3.

We write: 5 > 3

2 is to the left of 7.

So 2 is less than 7.

We write: 2 < 7
