Mathematics Grade 1 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Comparing Numbers within 20

We can compare numbers to see which is bigger or smaller.

We use these symbols:

  • > means "greater than"
  • < means "less than"
  • = means "equal to"

The symbol points to the smaller number!

8
>
3

8 is greater than 3.

The alligator mouth eats the bigger number!

To compare numbers:

  1. Look at both numbers.
  2. Find which one is bigger.
  3. Put the symbol between them.

Numbers with more tens are bigger.

If tens are the same, look at ones.
