Connection between Addition and Subtraction

Mathematics Grade 1 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Addition and Subtraction Are Friends!

What is Addition?

Addition means putting things together.

We use the plus sign (+).

+

3 + 2 = 5

What is Subtraction?

Subtraction is taking away, the amount becomes less.

We use the minus sign (−).

For example: \(5 - 2 = 3\).

32

Remove 2 from 5 — 3 remains

012345678−2

Move left by 2: \(5 - 2 = 3\)

🌟 The Big Secret! 🌟

Addition and subtraction are connected!

They are like opposite friends.

One puts together. One takes apart.

Let's See How They Work Together!

Look at this example: 5 + 3 = 8

Now watch! We can go backwards: 8 − 3 = 5
