Addition within 20 with place value transition (bridging through ten)

Mathematics Grade 1 Difficulty 3/5

Beginning of the lesson

Making Ten to Add Bigger Numbers

What You Already Know: You can add numbers like 6 + 3 = 9 and 12 + 5 = 17. Now we will learn to add when we need to cross over ten!

The Magic of Ten

Ten is a special number! When we add and get more than 10, we can use a trick called "Make Ten First."

Here's how it works:

  1. Look at the first number
  2. Ask: "How many more do I need to make 10?"
  3. Break apart the second number
  4. Make 10 first, then add what's left

Let's See It With Pictures!
