Place Value: Tens and Ones

Mathematics Grade 1 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Place Value: Tens and Ones

Numbers have special places.

Each place has a value.

Tens

Ones

The tens place is on the left.

The ones place is on the right.

4

4 tens = 40

2

2 ones = 2

So 42 means:

4 tens and 2 ones

40 + 2 = 42

Think of tens as bundles!

10 sticks make one bundle.

Loose sticks are ones.

One Thread: A ten is a bundle

Touch. Put a bundle of 10 sticks held by a rubber band on the desk, and 3 loose sticks next to it. How many in all? You can count them, or just say "a bundle and three".

Draw. Draw one long stick with a tie around it — that is the bundle — and three short lines next to it.

Write. 10 + 3 = 13. The 1 in 13 sits in the tens place and stands for that bundle. The 3 stands for the three loose sticks.

Task for the student: "Draw what you did with your hands — so that someone else can understand it. Then write it in numbers."
