Number Patterns and Relationships

Mathematics Grade 4 Difficulty 3/5

Beginning of the lesson

Number Patterns and Relationships

Number patterns are like secret codes in math! They are groups of numbers that follow a rule. When you figure out the rule, you can predict what numbers come next in the pattern.

What is a number pattern? A number pattern is a list of numbers that follows a certain rule.

Types of Number Patterns

Counting Patterns

These are patterns where you count by a certain number.

  • Counting by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ...
  • Counting by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, ...
  • Counting by 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, ...
Growing Patterns

These patterns get bigger by adding the same amount each time.

  • Adding 3: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, ...
  • Adding 7: 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, ...
Decreasing Patterns

These patterns get smaller by subtracting the same amount each time.

  • Subtracting 2: 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, ...
  • Subtracting 5: 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, ...

Finding the Pattern Rule

To find the rule in a pattern, look at how the numbers change from one to the next:

  1. Write down the pattern numbers
  2. Find what happens between each number
  3. Test your rule to see if it works for all the numbers

Remember: Some patterns might have more than one operation! For example, you might need to multiply and then add.

Why Patterns Are Important

Learning about patterns helps you:

  • Make predictions about what comes next
  • Solve problems more easily
  • Get ready for algebra in later grades
  • Notice patterns in the world around you

Patterns are everywhere! Think about the days of the week, seasons of the year, or even the design on your clothes. Math helps us understand these patterns!
