Understanding Points, Lines, Rays, Segments, and Angles

Welcome, Geometry Explorer! Today we're going to learn about the building blocks of geometry. These are the basic shapes and ideas that help us understand everything in geometry!

1. Points: Where It All Begins

A point is an exact location in space. It has no size, no width, and no length - it just shows a position!

  • How we show it: We draw a small dot
  • How we name it: We use capital letters like A, B, C, or P
  • Think of it like: A tiny speck of dust or a star in the sky

Points are the foundation of all geometric shapes. Everything we build in geometry starts with points!

2. Lines: Going On Forever

A line is perfectly straight and goes on forever in both directions. It never ends!

Key Features:
  • Perfectly straight
  • Extends infinitely in both directions
  • Has NO endpoints
  • Cannot be measured (it's infinite!)
  • We draw arrows on both ends to show it continues
How to Name a Line:
Method 1: Use any two points on the line
Example: Line AB or Line BA (same line!)

Method 2: Use a lowercase letter
Example: Line m or Line n

Real-World Connection: Imagine a road that goes on forever in both directions, or the horizon where the sky meets the ocean - that's like a line!
