Representing Multi-Digit Numbers as a Sum of Place Value Terms

Mathematics Grade 4 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Understanding Expanded Form: Breaking Numbers Apart!

What You'll Learn: How to break down big numbers into their place value parts, just like taking apart a LEGO creation to see all the individual pieces!

What is Expanded Form?

Expanded form is a way of writing numbers that shows the value of each digit. It's like opening up a number to see what's really inside!

Think of a number like a backpack. When you write it normally (like 3,456), the backpack is closed. When you write it in expanded form, you're opening the backpack to see everything inside!

The Place Value Chart

Every digit in a number has a special place, and each place has a different value:

Thousands1,000Hundreds100Tens10Ones134563,456

In the number 3,456:

  • 3 is in the thousands place = 3 × 1,000 = 3,000
  • 4 is in the hundreds place = 4 × 100 = 400
  • 5 is in the tens place = 5 × 10 = 50
  • 6 is in the ones place = 6 × 1 = 6
