Constructing Three-Dimensional Figures from Nets

Mathematics Grade 4 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Understanding Nets and 3D Figures

What is a Net?

A net is a flat pattern that can be folded to make a three-dimensional (3D) solid. Think of it like unwrapping a present box and laying all the sides flat on a table!

From Flat to 3D

Imagine you have a cardboard box. If you carefully cut along some edges and unfold it completely flat, you get a net. When you fold it back up, you get your 3D box again!

Key Ideas:

  • A net is a 2D (flat) shape
  • When folded, it becomes a 3D (solid) shape
  • The same 3D shape can have different nets
  • Each face of the 3D shape appears once in the net

Understanding Cubes

A cube is a special 3D shape where:

  • It has 6 faces (all squares)
  • All faces are the same size
  • It has 12 edges (all the same length)
  • It has 8 vertices (corners)
Real-World Examples:
Dice, Rubik's Cube, ice cubes, square gift boxes
