Large Numbers: Place Value System from Ones to Billions

Mathematics Grade 4 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Understanding Large Numbers: The Place Value System

What You'll Learn: How to read, write, and understand numbers from ones all the way to billions!

What is Place Value?

Every digit in a number has a special job based on where it sits. This is called place value. The same digit can mean different things depending on its position!

Look at the number 222:

  • ✓ The first 2 means 200 (two hundred)
  • ✓ The second 2 means 20 (two tens)
  • ✓ The third 2 means 2 (two ones)

Same digit, different values!

The Place Value Chart: Classes and Orders

Numbers are organized into groups called classes (also called periods). Each class has three places called orders. We separate classes with commas to make large numbers easier to read.

Key Pattern: Notice how each class has the same three places: Hundreds, Tens, and Ones. The pattern repeats every three digits!
