Work Problems: Productivity, Time, and Total Work
What Are Work Problems?
Work problems help us understand how much work gets done when we know how fast someone works and how long they work. Just like when you do homework, read books, or help with chores!
Understanding Work
Work is any task or job that needs to be completed. We can measure work by counting:
- Pages read or written
- Math problems solved
- Items made or built
- Rooms cleaned
- Pictures drawn
The key idea: Work has three important parts that work together!
The Three Parts of Work
- Total Work (W): How much work is completed (like 60 pages or 30 problems)
- Productivity (P): How fast you work (like 10 pages per hour)
- Time (t): How long you work (like 3 hours)
These three are connected! If you know two of them, you can find the third!
What is Productivity?
Productivity tells us how much work gets done in one unit of time. It's your work rate or work speed.
25 pages per hour
12 problems per hour
8 items per hour
The word "per" means "for each" or "in one." So "10 pages per hour" means you read 10 pages in each hour.
Productivity: 5 pages per hour (same amount each hour!)
