Finding Part of a Whole and Whole by Its Part

Mathematics Grade 4 Difficulty 3/5

Beginning of the lesson

Understanding Fractional Parts and Wholes

What You'll Learn: How to find a part of a whole number using fractions, and how to find the whole when you know just a part!

Part 1: What Does "Finding a Part" Mean?

When we say "find 3/4 of 20," we're asking: "If we divide 20 into 4 equal parts, what do 3 of those parts equal?"

The Key Word: "OF"

When you see the word "of" with fractions, it means we need to find a part of something. Think of it like sharing or dividing!

Example: 1/2 of 10 cookies means "divide 10 cookies into 2 equal groups and take 1 group"

The Two-Step Method for Finding a Part

Step 1: Divide by the Denominator (Bottom Number)

The denominator tells us how many equal parts to divide into.

Example: To find 3/4 of 20, first divide: 20 ÷ 4 = 5
This gives us the size of ONE part (one-fourth)

Step 2: Multiply by the Numerator (Top Number)

The numerator tells us how many of those parts we need.

Example: Now multiply: 5 × 3 = 15
So 3/4 of 20 = 15
