Subtraction of Natural Numbers

Grade 5 Mathematics — Mastering Large Number Subtraction

Learning Objectives: By the end of this lesson, you will understand what subtraction is, master column subtraction with large numbers, learn to check your work, and solve real-world problems involving subtraction.

1. What is Subtraction?

Subtraction is one of the four basic arithmetic operations (along with addition, multiplication, and division).

Key Insight:

Subtraction is the inverse (opposite) operation of addition. If addition puts things together, subtraction takes them apart!

When we subtract, we find how much remains when one quantity is taken away from another.

Real-Life Example:

If you have 15,000 som and spend 6,000 som, subtraction tells you that 9,000 som remains.

15,000 − 6,000 = 9,000

2. The Mathematical Definition of Difference

Formal Definition:

The difference of numbers a and b is the number which, when added to b, gives a.

If a − b = c, then c + b = a

Example with Large Numbers:
15,000 − 6,000 = 9,000
We can verify: 9,000 + 6,000 = 15,000 ✓

This relationship is the foundation for checking subtraction with addition!

a b c − = c + b = a (verification)
