Two Meanings of Division

Partitive (Sharing)

Question: "If we share 20,000 candies among 4 people, how many does each person get?"

20,000 ÷ 4 = 5,000

Each person gets 5,000 candies

Quotative (Measurement)

Question: "How many groups of 5,000 can we make from 20,000?"

20,000 ÷ 5,000 = 4

We can make 4 groups

Key Insight: Both meanings give related answers! If 20,000 ÷ 4 = 5,000, then 20,000 ÷ 5,000 = 4
