The Concept of a Fraction
Understanding how to represent parts of a whole
1. Why Do We Need Fractions?
Natural numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4... are great for counting whole things. But what happens when we need to divide something into parts?
The Problem: Imagine you have 1 pizza and want to share it equally among 4 friends. Each person gets less than 1 whole pizza, but more than 0. Natural numbers can't express this!

The Solution: FRACTIONS!
Fractions are a new type of number that lets us express parts of a whole.
Each person gets 1/4 (one-fourth) of the pizza!
Fractions fill the gaps between whole numbers on the number line.
2. What is a Fraction?
A fraction is a number that represents one or more equal parts of a whole.
We write fractions as: a/b or a⁄b
Key Idea: The whole is divided into equal parts, and we take some of those parts.
Example: 3/4 means:
- The whole is divided into 4 equal parts
- We take 3 of those parts
