What Are Work Problems?

Work problems are math problems about completing tasks or jobs. These tasks can be done by:

👷

Workers

People doing jobs
🚜

Machines

Tractors, printers
🚰

Pipes

Filling tanks
🏭

Factories

Making products
🎯 The main questions we answer:
  • How long does it take to complete a job?
  • How fast does someone work? (their rate)
  • How much work gets done in a certain time?

💡 The Big Idea: The Whole Work = 1

In work problems, we always say the entire job equals 1 (one complete job).

It doesn't matter what the work is:
  • Painting a house = 1
  • Filling a swimming pool = 1
  • Plowing a field = 1
  • Making 100 parts = 1

The complete job is always 1!

THE WHOLE JOB = 1 One complete task
