Problems Involving Parts (Ratio Problems)

What Are "Parts" Problems?

In parts problems, we compare quantities using equal portions called parts.

Think of it like this:

If you share a pizza where your friend gets 2 slices and you get 3 slices, the ratio is 2 parts : 3 parts or simply 2:3

Key Concept: What is "One Part"?
  • A part is an equal portion used to compare quantities
  • Finding the value of one part is the key to solving these problems
  • Once you know one part, you can find any number of parts!

Why Diagrams Matter

Drawing pictures helps you see the problem clearly!

Berries (2 parts): Part 1 Part 2 Sugar (3 parts): Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Pro Tip: Use boxes or segments to represent parts. Label each part and the total. This makes relationships clear and reduces errors!
