Multiplication of Mixed Numbers

Mathematics Grade 5 Difficulty 3/5

Beginning of the lesson

Multiplication of Mixed Numbers

Learn how to multiply numbers that have both whole and fractional parts!

What is Multiplying Mixed Numbers?

A mixed number has two parts:

  • 1 A whole number part
  • 2 A fraction part
Example: 2½ means "2 and one-half" or "2 wholes plus ½"

Multiplying mixed numbers means finding the product of numbers that have both whole and fractional parts.

Think of it this way:
2½ × 1¼ means "2½ groups of 1¼" or "1¼ groups of 2½"

The Key Principle

WARNING: You CANNOT multiply parts separately!

2½ × 1½ ≠ (2×1) + (½×½) = 2¼ ← WRONG!

The Correct Method:
  1. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions first
  2. Multiply as regular fractions
  3. Convert the result back to a mixed number

This is the most reliable method!
