Mathematics Grade 5 Difficulty 1/5

Beginning of the lesson

Metric Units of Length

Learn how to measure, convert, and calculate with the metric system!

What is the Metric System?

The metric system is a decimal system based on powers of 10. This makes it super easy to convert between units!

  • The base unit of length is the METER (m)
  • Prefixes tell us if units are larger or smaller
  • Used worldwide in science and most countries
  • Each step is simply ×10 or ÷10
Why Powers of 10?

Because we use a base-10 number system! Converting is as easy as moving the decimal point.

Example: 3.5 m = 350 cm (just move decimal 2 places right!)
