Number Sense and Mental Math Strategies
Number sense is like having a special friendship with numbers. It means you understand how numbers work together and can use them in clever ways without always needing pencil and paper!
- Solve math problems in your head quickly
- Make good guesses about answers
- Know if your answer makes sense
- Feel confident with numbers
Mental Math Strategies
Mental math means doing math in your head. Here are some helpful strategies:
You can break numbers into parts that are easier to work with.
Example: 45 + 27
Break it into: 40 + 20 = 60, then 5 + 7 = 12, and finally 60 + 12 = 72
Find ways to make groups of 10, which are easier to add.
Example: 8 + 7
Think: 8 + 2 = 10, and 7 - 2 = 5, so 10 + 5 = 15
Start with one number and count forward or backward.
Example: 23 + 5
Start at 23, then count: 24, 25, 26, 27, 28
Use doubles facts you know well.
Example: 6 + 7
Think: 6 + 6 = 12, and 7 is 1 more than 6, so 12 + 1 = 13
Estimation
Estimation means making a smart guess that's close to the exact answer. It helps you check if your answer makes sense!
When to estimate:
- When you're shopping and want to know about how much you'll spend
- When you're checking if your exact answer is reasonable
- When you don't need an exact answer
To estimate, you can round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, then do the math with those simpler numbers.
Number Relationships
Understanding how numbers relate to each other helps with mental math:
- Fact families: Groups of related facts like 3 + 5 = 8, 5 + 3 = 8, 8 - 3 = 5, and 8 - 5 = 3
- Part-whole relationships: Understanding that 8 can be made up of 5 and 3, or 4 and 4, or 6 and 2
- Number bonds: Pairs of numbers that add up to a target number
The more you practice these strategies, the faster your brain will get at working with numbers!
