Beginning of the lesson

🎯 The Associative Property of Addition

Learn how to group numbers in different ways!

πŸ€” What is the Associative Property?

πŸ“š Big Idea:

When we add three or more numbers, we can group them in different ways. The answer stays the same!

(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)

The parentheses show which numbers we add first!

🍬 Simple Explanation with Candy!

Imagine you have 3 bags of candy:

🍬🍬

2 candies

🍬🍬🍬

3 candies

🍬🍬🍬🍬

4 candies

Way 1: Add first two, then the third

2 + 3 = 5

5 + 4 = 9

Way 2: Add last two, then the first

3 + 4 = 7

2 + 7 = 9

✨ Same Answer! ✨

(2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) = 9 candies!
